Cinnamon Ashford Is Building the Pathways Detroit's Tech Learners Need

August 2024, orientation week at the Apple Developer Academy in Detroit. Cinnamon Ashford is watching — tracking who needs what, who is stuck, who needs to be pointed toward a resource they don't yet know exists. Her title is Learner Services Coordinator. "I realized I wasn't just coordinating operations," she says. "I was helping build opportunities that could change people's futures."
Cinnamon Ashford holds several titles at once — Coordinator, Entrepreneur, Graduate student, Mother, Detroiter — and does not rank them. She is becoming a transformational leader by building pathways that connect people to opportunity, innovation, and lasting success.
Detroit's population is more than 75% Black (U.S. Census Bureau), yet Black professionals represent approximately 7% of the U.S. tech workforce (BLS), and Black founders receive roughly 1% of venture capital funding (Crunchbase). The problem isn't ambition — it's access to networks, navigators, and someone who will explain how the system actually works.
Access. Visibility. The absence of a roadmap. Talented, motivated learners stall not because they lack capability but because they don't know where to start or that certain opportunities exist at all.
The support she'd received — from community organizers, from Black Tech Saturdays and Venture 313 — was not luck. It was infrastructure. And infrastructure can be built again, for the next person.
She mapped what learners actually needed, then built systems: Airtable for learner information, Monday.com and Confluence for workflows, resource guides, and partnerships with Detroit at Work, the City of Detroit Health Department, and MSU's Spartan Shelf. Roughly ten community organizations came into the network (self-reported estimate). Hard lesson: "I learned that access alone is not enough. People also need guidance, encouragement, and someone willing to help them navigate the path."
Since beginning at the Apple Developer Academy in June 2024 (formal role starting December 2024): 112 confirmed resource referrals, approximately 400 learners supported (self-reported estimate), approximately $8,000 in funding and donated resources secured (self-reported estimate), roughly 10 community partners engaged, and a Wellness Lunch & Learn with about 10 participants.
The next learner who believes opportunity is reserved for people with networks, credentials, or capital encounters evidence to the contrary — and that evidence changes what feels possible.
