Donovan Brown Is Closing Detroit's AI Literacy Gap

On a Saturday morning at Newlab at Michigan Central, Donovan Brown walked into a Black Tech Saturdays event and did something that changed the course of his career: he introduced himself to a stranger. That stranger — Lorenzo — would become a colleague, a friend, and the weekly accountability partner who helped Donovan stay anchored to a mission he hadn't yet fully named.

Donovan Brown introduces himself plainly: Technical Consultant and AI Integration Developer, Detroit. He is becoming an AI consultant by building a personal brand and connecting with solopreneurs and small businesses who have been largely locked out of the tools reshaping the economy.

Nearly half of Detroit residents — approximately 47% — lack broadband access, according to data cited by the City of Detroit's digital equity initiatives. At the same time, AI-related job demand in the Detroit metro area surged by 162% between 2023 and 2025 (self-reported). Two trajectories moving in opposite directions: demand accelerating while access remains severed.

Donovan did not arrive at this work from a position of comfort. When he transitioned careers into software development, there was no community waiting for him, no cohort to navigate the confusion with. He burned out. He came close to quitting.

The hinge came on that Saturday morning — not a speech, a conversation. Community turned out to be the infrastructure he needed before the code made sense. He supplemented Black Tech Saturdays with Udemy, Codecademy, YouTube, and Zero to Mastery, and learned to focus on fundamentals rather than trying to learn every language at once.

By January 2026, Donovan had been promoted to Technology Program Manager at Live6 Alliance in Detroit (self-reported). That same month, he joined the AI Collective Detroit Chapter as a Chapter Co-Lead (self-reported). In June 2026, he was featured on Channel 7 News in a segment on AI in the Workplace (self-reported).

Donovan Brown is living proof that you do not need a computer science degree to build a career in technology. You need focus, resilience, and a room where someone will hold you accountable on a Saturday morning.
